Swordsman Charity

Helping to change the lives of others

Fundraising for educational, architectural and disadvantaged peoples

Swordsman Charity was established in 2011 to help promote several causes that were of great concern to us; education, building restoration and poverty relief.

The genesis of the idea developed slowly over several years, working in the architectural design business. I have always had a tremendous affinity for old buildings and have worked on their conservation and restoration for many years. As time passed, I began to think about how I might facilitate the restoration of historic properties, especially those in danger of being lost altogether. With this project, the biggest challenge to overcome, is undoubtedly raising the funding to facilitate their restorations. I therefore decided to establish a charity to raise funds for building restoration projects.

From this inception, I then began to think about other worthy causes that inspired me and required funding. I therefore decided to also raise funds to finance underprivileged children into private schools, as I have a deep affinity for educational matters. This then led to a desire to raise funds to alleviate poverty in the inner cities. At Swordsman Charity, we believe that we can assist people in all three of these areas.

At Swordsman Charity we operate a prestigious fellowship for those individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to those subjects which represent our core values. Education, building restoration and poverty relief. Those people whom we deem to have made a sufficiently substantial contribution to our areas of interest will receive the distinction of becoming members of Swordsman Fellowship.

Fellows are allowed to use the suffix FSwOE after their names; Fellow of the Swordsman Order of Excellence. Fellows are also allowed to wear branded ties, blazers, cufflinks and badges. There is also a full ceremonial regalia as part of the order, which must be worn at all ceremonial events. These include an annual church service and an investiture ceremony, both at St Mary the Virgin in Oxford. There is also a summer garden party and a cocktail party.

For those interested in joining, please contact Swordsman Charity to apply for possible membership. The joining fee is £200 for a life membership to cover administration costs. There is no annual fee. Once elected, all Fellows must also purchase the full ceremonial regalia and associated club attire as these garments must be worn at the relevant social events. There is a strict dress code which applies to all events.

Over the years we have secured funding for several building restoration projects. A variety of medieval and early modern structures have been sympathetically renovated according to our guidance and support, throughout southern Britain. We helped to secure funding for a limestone dovecote in Oxfordshire, that needed reroofing and repointing. We also helped to organise finance for a medieval building in Gloucestershire and helped to renovate a cob wall cottage in Dorset.

For poverty relief, we have been raising and supplying funding for disadvantaged people for sometime. We have given aid to inner-city people within the UK, to help improve their housing and facilities. We have also targeting disaster relief areas overseas that have required assistance, such as the Haiti earthquake of 2010 and the two Indonesian tsunamis of 2018.
